Explore the Stone Garden
A lunar landscape on Earth
Hostal Mexiquillo is the starting point to explore a unique natural gem: the Stone Garden. Immerse yourself in this incredible excursion that will transport you to a surreal landscape and leave you breathless. Join us to discover the mysteries of this geological phenomenon and live an unforgettable experience.
In the park’s plains, you will find numerous rock formations reaching surprising heights, exceeding 7 – and even 8 – meters. These formations are mainly composed of extrusive igneous rock, with a lesser presence of rhyolite. You can also marvel at some formations of basalt and plutonic rock. The Stone Garden, as known by locals, is famous for its singular arrangement of rocks through clearings in the forest.
This set of petrified lava rocks resembles huge monoliths, creating the sensation of being in another world. The inevitable question arises when visiting it: “Am I on the moon or on a movie set?”. This unique place will captivate you as you enter a semi-arid plain surrounded exclusively by rock formations with rounded edges. The explanation for this phenomenon dates back to prehistoric times. Millions of years ago, an abundant mass of incandescent magma covered the earth’s surface. The relentless erosion of the wind polished the rock, leaving only the densest parts to resist wear. You must keep in mind that beneath your feet are rock formations sculpted by the whims of nature, which will wait a million years to see the light again.
Discover the Lagoon in Mexiquillo
A natural paradise
The Mexiquillo Lagoon is a natural paradise surrounded by coniferous forests. It was formed when stone was extracted for grinding and laying asphalt during the construction of the Durango – Mazatlán free road. With approximately 150 meters in diameter and a depth of 5 meters, the Mexiquillo Lagoon fills and overflows with crystal clear water during the rains. In summer time, the inhabitants of the town “La Ciudad” use the lagoon as a swimming area. Enjoy a refreshing swim in this beautiful place and marvel at the natural beauty of the Mexiquillo Lagoon.
